As we were looking at our maps and books this morning, I noticed that it was not unreasonable to take a detour to the east and spend a couple nights at one of our most favorite vacation sights--Long Beach, NC--now known as Oak Island, NC. And so we have rented an ocean front cottage for 2 nights.

We think we started coming to this beach around 1974 and we have such wonderful memories that it feels like coming home again.

Neither of us has ever been to the beach during the winter. We enjoyed a nice walk on the beach--stuck my fingers in the water and it seemed as cold as the ice cold Savage River in western Maryland during August! This same water will be about 79 degrees in July.

I'd like to say that I built this sandcastle, but it was already there when we walked by. We saw the children out earlier who did construct it and I guess they were all inside taking naps! We always work on sand castles when we are at the beach.

Cordell enjoyed relaxing on a bench near our cottage.

We had another gourmet lunch---ham and cheese sandwiches!

A lot of places on the island are closed for the off season. We were disappointed when we found out that our favorite restaurant at the Blue Water Marina does not open until Valentine's Day. However, we were given a recommendation for another restaurant and had a delicious seafood dinner.

There was a pretty sunset tonight. No one can paint a prettier picture than God!

Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest---at least that's our plan at the moment, but it could be changed anytime because we HAVE LOTS OF TIME!!!

  1. AWESOME! I loooove the beach in winter ... especially when there's no one else there! Two or 3 years ago I actually took Mom and went up to Ocean City for a WEEK - in January! Nothing was open, and I spent a week just admiring that gorgeous ocean and communing with God... it was wonderful! I could sure handle living there. Not sure I could handle giving up First Lutheran though.

We'll MISS you tomorrow night (and lots of Monday nights), but I know you'll be having fun! Keep BLOGGING Girl! I've bookmarked you. (as for my blog? It's been deserted for quite some time... sad, but true.)
