January 10, 2012

We spent most of this day touring in old Savannah. What a beautiful and charming town this is! One day is not enough to see and experience all that this place offers.

We began with a 90 minute trolley tour. Our guide confessed that he has a great love of history and we were amazed at the amount of information he gave us.  After we finished the tour, we were allowed to hop on and off the trolley all day long. Even better, when we were ready to leave, we phoned the tour company and they had a small bus pick us up within minutes and take us back to our car.  If we had so desired, we could have phoned in all during the day and had the bus come for us and drop us where we wanted. All of this for $22.00 a person.

I was disappointed when we found out that Paula Deane’s store and restaurant were closed and would not reopen while we were in town.

I enjoyed shopping in an old 5and 10Store. Good memories of the 1950’s when these stores were in many of the towns in the south.
I was especially interested in the memorial to Gen. Casimir Pulaski since I spent most of my growing up years in Pulaski, Virginia. Gen. Pulaski fell in the Battle of Savannah in the cause of the American independence. A statute of Liberty sits at the top of the monument. The designer of the memorial said "The love of liberty brought Pulaski to America; for the love of liberty he fought, and for liberty he lost his life. Thus, I thought that liberty should crown his monument and there share with him the hommage of the free."

We stopped in at the Lutheran Church of the Ascention. This church was founded in 1741 and the present structure was built in 1878. The Sanctuary is on the second floor. Several other churches used this facility over the years.

Among some of the famous people who were born in Savannah was songwriter, Johnny Mercer, who won four Academy Awards for Best Original Song. He wrote the lyrics for Moon River and Days of Wine and Roses.

There are trees that still have leaves and plants that are still blooming.

Our feet were really tired and we called it a day, but could have spent much, more time in the special place.

  1. UGH! I am soooooo sorry you don't get to enjoy Paula Deans! That is just too sad! But you did a lot with the time you had. We took that trolley tour too - it was great! They really do have good guides - very knowledgeable! We had one woman that was just a RIOT! We laughed soooo hard! (course, it didn't take much!)

Okay! Can't wait to find out what you'll be up to next! Carry on! :)
